In this paper, we investigate a simplified decoding method for the trellis-based error-correcting modulation codes using the M-algorithm for holographic data storage. The M-algorithm, which sacrifices the bit error rate performance, can reduce the Viterbi algorithm's complexity. When the M-algorithm is used in the trellis-based error-correcting modulation codes, common delay and complexity problems can be reduced. (C) 2012 The Japan Society of Applied Physics-
