Abstract
This paper presents the problem of selecting profitable customer orders sequentially arriving at service providing companies with multiple servers in which two types of services are provided. The first class of service is designed to meet the particular needs of customers, and for the customer asking for this service the decision maker makes a decision on which policy to employ between admission control and pricing control policies. Under former policy he decides whether to accept or to reject the order for the service, whereas under latter policy he decides a price of the order and offers it to an arriving customer. The second class of service is provided as a sideline, which prevents servers being idle when the number of customer orders is less than the number of servers. This yields the sideline profit. We clarify the properties of the switching strategy between the admission control and pricing control policies with relation to the sideline profits. In particular, we show that when the sideline is sufficiently large, there may exist multiple switching thresholds with respect to the number of customer orders in the system.
