- Abstract
- This study describes the conflict between parents and adolescent child with the view of family therapy. The purposes of the study were to find the factors affecting conflict between parents and adolescent child, the dysfucntionally attempted communication patterns used by the family members, the therapist's intervention techniques used to change the communication patterns among family members and the changed family's features through the newly attempted communication patterns.
The total family counseling was 7 sessions, which included individual, couple, and family counseling. The study used constant comparative analysis by using open coding method to find the factors above mentioned. Also, the study used Miles and Huberman'matrix, graph, and graphical network display to analyze the data.
The results of the study showed father's dysfunctional communication pattern, misunderstanding between father and adolescent child, mother's dysfunctional communication pattern, parents' experience in the family of origin and the communication pattern in the family of origin as factors affecting the conflict between parents and adolescent child. The dysfunctional communication method used by the family members were consisted of ‘avoiding or cutting off communication pattern', ‘suppressing feeling without exchanging emotion (dull expression of feeling)', ‘scolding without listening to the reason (one-sided discipline or advice)', ‘uncompromising attitude (one-sided instruction of strict rules)', ‘doubtfully questioning without believing adolescent child',and ‘sarcastic speaking. The outcome of study revealed that family members used ‘speaking frankly’, ‘accepting the experience, feeling, and adolescent child's opinion,‘standing by the adolescent child's side or agreeing with them’, and ‘frank expression of the parent's position' after they got family therapy. The study found ‘self revelation’,‘formation of trustful relations with the client', ‘helping the client's insight,' and ‘introducing new communication method as therapist's intervention techniques used to bring about the change of communication method among family members.
