- Abstract
- Many different regional and social varieties of English, or New Englishes, have emerged and are continuously expanding their boundaries all over the world. Various Englishes including British English and American English, competes for a potential lingua franca in the future, therefore raising a question of whether there is a standard English accepted throughout the world. The purpose of this study is to investigate and discuss the process of standardization of English from a diachronic perspective to suggest a proper form of English for EFL classes in Korea. The standardization process of English can be summarized into several stages; first, one variety is to be selected among varieties of a language, then elaborated, codified or prescribed, and finally implemented. The study reviews each stage of the process with respect to written versus spoken English as well as standard versus dialects of English.
