Abstract
This paper is mainly about a critical suggestion of the Chinese modern cultural studies which has been actively discussed recently in Korea. It is in general to examine the basis of the demand for the methodological paradigm, ‘cultural politics’, and to explore its possibility. The Beijing Olympics in 2008 was one of the events that provided a road map of ‘the 21st century cultural China.’ Given the existing studies divided into Literature, Linguistics, History, Philosophy, and so on, it is difficult to capture all the details presented through the Olympics. Nor is cultural studies, which has been debated intensively these days, not properly read the mechanism of the discourse production because it focuses too much on the critical analysis of cultural phenomena in the age of post-socialism. From this point of view, ‘Beijing consensus’, the frequently mentioned term these days, can be a valid model for the alternative methodology. In this methodology, culture, politics, and economy are all mixed up, analyses and interpretations are co-existed, and tradition and future are combined as one point of view. This paper is to make the direction, the method, and the attitude toward this critical mind en bloc, and to generalize it as Chinese ‘cultural politics.’ It is necessary for this concept to have in-depth consideration and methodological findings. Nevertheless, it provides a practical viewpoint to understand and interpret rapidly changing ‘recent China’.
