- Abstract
- In 1960s Western society had experienced development and change of whole social disciplines including politics, economics and arts. It was a shifting period between modern and postmodern, elite culture and popular culture. Popular culture already impacted on every corner of everyday life at the time no matter what their qualities are. Interior design which has focused on the users had absorbed ordinary people's taste that emerged as a mass class composed of many individual customers through the sixties. SF(Scientific Fictions) had got great popularities and it was infiltrated into interior design such as furniture design, interior design and exhibition design easily and effectively. This ingredient combined by new technological interpretation and synthetic material organically had formed the popular characteristics in interior design discipline. Those characteristics can be condensed to some design vocabulary such as imitation and metaphor of SF motif, adoption of the idea of system and program, interior-oriented isolation space. Interior design of 1960s cast these dynamic and exotic formal issues and made them popular utilizing circumstances of the time. Moreover those issues are still effective and repercussive even today. As a result, the interactions between spirit of the time, Zeitgeist and individual creativity had cultivated rich meaning and abundant designs in interior design through the sixties of Western culture. And their experiences could be an useful lesson to us who live in the consumer driven society through the meaning of this age and how to initiate it.
