- Abstract
- Adolf Schlatter begins his dogmatics with anthropology dealing with humans as the work of God the creator. He marks history as indispensable for the anthropology. He characterizes his idea of theology as "watching theology," namely the empirical theology. He rejects the consciousness theology oriented to the self-watch. He undertook the anthropological fundamental reflection before thinking all the detailed articles of dogmatics, believing that the anthropological process of revelation history corresponds to the world-historical process of divine testimony. Schlatter criticized the atheistic method in the theology from the viewpoint of theology. He undertook to found the empirical theology, emphasizing the experience of self-disclosedness appearing in the creation and history through anthropological approach in the contemporary theology. The distinctiveness of Schlatter's theology consists in that he consciously pre-set up the creation theology as anthropology and emphasized the ongoing meaning of history. His theological thinking overcame the limits of history-less Kantian theology in which dialectical theology since Karl Barth had entered, by emphasizing creation and history.
