Abstract
This study found that the price difference between home and abroad had been decreasing through 1980s and 1990s in Japan. However, the reality shows that despite of the continuously decreasing domestic prices, the price difference between home and abroad had not been dramatically reduced due to the inefficiency of the non-manufacturing sector. To solve this problem, the study argued the necessity of social consensus that the price difference between home and abroad should be reduced through the pursuit of efficiency in the non-manufacturing and service sectors. The study also pointed out that the return home of Japanese manufacturing sectors since 2003 got rid of the considerable part of 'industrial hollowing out' effects caused by the stagnation of business activities and the increase of unemployment rate in 1990s. That is, the synergy between globalization of Japanese firms and domestic industry resulted in profit increases. Finally, the study suggested several policies that may mitigate the 'industrial hollowing out' problem recently issued in Korea by reviewing the Japanese cases.
