Abstract
This paper aims to propose that Chinese resultatives in the form of V-de construction are better considered as having two distinctive internal structures than as unitary one. The different behavior of the secondary subject with respect to the subjecthood and objecthood tests can be effectively captured if we postulate that both control and SC constructions are involved in the internal structure of resultatives. These structural differences may be attributed to the existence of selection relation and argument-sharing between the primary and the secondary predicates. Namely, if the secondary subject is shared by or common to the two predicates, it may be represented as Pro in the control construction (either subject-control or object-control); if there is no argument-sharing between the two predicates, the secondary subject is realized as the embedded lexical NP subject of the SC construction. The priority of the secondary subject and the absence of the unaccusativity effect in the unselected RCs will provide further support for the distinctive internal structures of the Chinese V-de resultatives.
