Distribution system is one of the most important component to provide reliable or safe drinking water to people. Especially, maintaining chlorine residual in the distribution system is very critical to provide microbial free water. The deposits, known as scale, not only reduce the inside pipe but also reduce the chlorine residual. In this research, the effects of deposits in CIP and GSP on decay of chlorine residual were investigated. The effort to separate the effect of inorganic and organic was made. Major component of the deposit was Fe no matter how long the pipe was on service. After incineration the deposit showed less chlorine decay compare to the before incineration both deposits obtained from CIP and GSP. There was no correlation between serving period and chlorine decay. Rapid decay of chlorine residual in the sample before incineration was mainly caused by the higher concentration of Fe and DOC compare to the after incineration sample. The characteristics change of the deposits caused by the incineration was hardly affect the chlorine decay.-
