Abstract
Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) films were reacted with four amine compounds of hydrazine, ethylenediamine (EDA), diethylenetriamine (DETA), and triethylenetetramine (TETA) in a reaction medium of various concentrations of aqueous N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution to impart high hydrophilicity of high moisture absorbing property, while maintaining their film shapes during and after the modification. Add-on's and amino group contents of the modified PAN films reacted with the four compounds at various conditions were obtained and compared each other. The add-on's of the specimens reacted with a same mole concentration of the four amine solution increased in an order of hydrazine, TETA, DETA, EDA, but the amino group content increased in an order of TETA, DETA, hydrazine, and EDA. Although EDA was efficient to give high add-on and high amine content, it made the modified film highly swollen and soluble in the reaction medium. Among the four amines, hydrazine was the most effective amination compound considering the high amine content and high moisture regain. The moisture regain of the modified PAN films became up to 23.0% at an add-on of 26.7% when 1.6 M hydrazine solution was used. The moisture regains of the modified PAN films increased linearly depending on the amine group content, not on the add-on (weight increase), the increase tendency being the same regardless of the kind of amine compounds.
