- Abstract
- The main purpose of this study is to investigate Onmyoji-related works diachronically through the consideration on the relationship between literature and other media, focusing on 『Onmyoji』 by Yumemakura Baku. The results of this study are as follows.
The first finding is about a genealogy of literature relating to Abeno Seimei who actually existed in the Heian period. He frequently appeared in the diaries of aristocrats in the Heian period. Even after that, he was often seen in many tales and the following tales were written: 『Hokinaiden』in the period of the Northern and Southern Courts, 『Hokisho』『Abeno Seimei Monogatari』 『Abeno Nakamaro Nittoki』etc. in early-modern times. In addition, around the Genroku period, based on these classical literature, Japanese classical performing arts such as Joruri and Kabuki were produced one after the other. Soon after start of the modern era, many traditional storytelling works were made such as 『Kodan Abeno Seimei』. Subsequently, novels about Seimei were wriiten by Tanizaki Junichiro, Mishima Yukio, Shibusawa Tatsuhiko, and so on, and eventually a series of Onmyoji by Yumemakura Baku was published. After that, many light novels and juvenile literature were created, in which various methods of story-telling were attempted in order to describe different images of Abeno Seimei made by Yumemakura Baku.
The second finding is about media mix(franchise), a method to disperse the original novel across multiple media works. It can be said that relationship between the literature of proses in the middle and early-modern times and classical performing arts is a kind of media mix in that the written work transforms into the other media works. More recently, the written works integrate more with various media. In particular, it is a rare case where the original work has been successfully utilized into a lot of media and is popular among people of all ages such as 『Onmyoji』 by Yumemakura Baku. It is not too much to say that the key to the success lies in an encounter with different media.
