SPRS: Standby Power Reduction System for an Efficient Power Management

Abstract

The Internet has greatly improved in a very short term and there has appeared a home network environment where all home appliances are connected. They provide users with convenience but an increasing number of home appliances lead to higher energy consumption. Furthermore, with the advent of various smart home appliances, the home network environment has changed into the "smart" home environment. Under this circumstance, most home appliances are connected with a network and are ready to receive internal or external signals in their standby mode, which consumes electricity continuously. Accordingly, every year the electricity consumed while those devices are idle is increasing and expected to amount to 20% of total electricity consumption. This paper 1) monitored power consumption of all home appliances in the smart home environment; 2) analyzed the pattern, 3) designed a system applying an algorithm of automatically cutting off power (automatic standby power cutoff algorithm) and 4) verified its energy saving effect through an experiment.
