An RSS-comparison based localization in wireless sensor networks

Abstract

Wireless sensor networks are becoming more widely used in various fields. Localization is a crucial and essential issue for sensor network applications. In this paper, we propose a simple, distributed and low cost localization algorithm which approaches the benefits of range-free schemes. The proposed algorithm utilizes the location information of neighbor anchor nodes to estimate the intersection points of the neighbor anchors' communication ranges. Then, by using RSS (Received Signal Strength)-comparison, it compares the RSS of received signals from the neighbor anchor nodes and selects the valid points to find the sensor node's locations. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm is more accurate and stable than the traditional algorithm which has the similar approach. © 2011 IEEE.
