Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to explore ways of improving critical thinking skills via discussion boards. It reviews various critical thinking characteristics such as predispositions, examines instruments for measuring critical thinking, explores ways critical thinking skills may be improved, and examines various aspects of asynchronous discussion board methodology for its impact on critical thinking. Specific things we found to enhance critical thinking in asynchronous online discussions include limiting discussion size, using the Socratic Method, compelling critical thinking practice rather than allowing research for responses, and not dividing topics for discussion between pro and con. We propose the medium of asynchronous online discussion student critical thinking abilities recommendations to assist educators in designing activities and using asynchronous discussion boards to improve critical thinking in their classrooms.
