A new type of photoluminescent liquid crystal (LC) device based on a thin layer of CdSe quantum dots (QDs) was proposed to simultaneously offer photoluminescence and fast response time. A thin layer of CdSe QDs was spin-coated on an indium tin oxide electrode as the bottom of the polyimide (PI) alignment layer. This can provide the PI layer with vertical topographic effect, strongly anchoring the LC molecules to the alignment layer. The high anchoring force of the LC device afforded a rapidly falling response time. Furthermore, the CdSe QD layer enabled the device to exhibit photoluminescence under UV irradiation.-
