- Abstract
- 본고는 최근까지 미국에서 수행되어 온 방언 연구의 성과와 그 방법론에 대하여 개괄적으로 검토하되, 특히 언어 변이와 변화에 대한 William Labov의 연구를 중심으로 논의하였다. 그의 연구는 다음과 같은 의의를 지닌다. 첫째, 공시적인 언어 변이 현상에 주목하고, 그러한 변이에 대한 관찰과 분석을 통하여 통시적인 언어 변화의 원리를 찾고자 하였다. 둘째, 공시적인 문법을 기술하기 위한, 형식주의 언어학과 기능주의 언어학의 통합 모형을 마련하고자 하였다. 셋째, 지역 방언과 사회 방언을 포괄적으로 조사․연구하였으며, 그러한 방언 연구를 통해 일반 언어학적 관점에서 의미 있는 일반화를 이끌어 내고자 하였다. 넷째, 언어 변이 및 변화의 원리를 밝히기 위하여 언어 내적 요인과 사회적 요인은 물론 인지적․문화적 요인까지 고려하였다.
