Abstract
As the main public building representing a city, the city hall has been positioned easily accessible to the citizens. The Chuncheon city hall project in South Korea was put into effect via a public competition for the purpose of urban regeneration in terms of urban sustainability. This study analyzed the design competition for the Chuncheon city hall from urban sustainability. First, in the urban context, each proposal was analyzed focusing on site planning and relevant context. Then for more specific analysis, common space as the Ground of the public buildings was comparatively analyzed, focusing on the lower levels in each proposal. Finally, the sectional viewpoints connected with adjacent urban context were analyzed through each proposal. As a result, it was established that the detailed planning of the common space became a more important planning issue for the enhancement of public utilization, as compared to the detailed planning of the private space separated from the architectural direction suggested in the main idea of each proposal. In addition, according to environmental and technological terms, the most important aspect was passive circulation, which must be considered as a significant planning gesture, which was able to coordinate the various planning elements, in order to achieve successful environmental sustainability. © 2017 International Information Institute.
