Christian Discernment through the Neuroscientific Lens: Within Jonathan Edwards’ Religious Affection

Abstract

This research addresses the centrality of affection in authentic spiritual discernment in the Christian tradition. The interdisciplinary research describes how an ground–breaking knowledge of the neuroscience, will play a pivotal role, both implicitly and explicitly, in overcoming the dominant dualistic view of human nature, as well as in promoting spiritual discernment. The research elucidates that all human cognitive activities include emotionality, and emotions play a vital role in initiating cognitive procedures. It equips this research to examine Jonathan Edwards’ ideas concerning the religious affections and their implications for affective discernment. It claims that the Christian discernment should genuinely be embodied in locus where affection and divine characteristics are interdependent and reciprocal for cultivating spiritual formation in Korean protestant churches.

본 소고는 기독교 영성 전통인 영적 분별이 전인적으로 함양되기 위해서는 인간 정서의 중심성을 이해해야 한다는 주장을 펼치고 있다. 인간 정신에 관한 뇌/신경과학 연구들은 한국교회 내에 팽배한 이분법적 세계관과 인간이해를 극복해야 함을 암시할 뿐 아니라, 영적 분별의 전인성을 고양시킬 수 있음을 보여주고 있다. 감정이 인간 정신을 자극하고, 실행하고 생성하는데 구성적 요소로 작용하고 있다는 뇌과학적 사실을 바탕으로, ‘정서’는 인지작용과 감성작용의 상호 협력과 의존적 작용임을 주장한다. 이는 에드워즈가 제시한 종교 감정과 기독교 분별이 동시대의 한국교회에도 그 적절성과 타당성을 확인해주는 결정적 근거가 된다. 이를 통해 필자는 영적 감정/정서는 하나님의 영감의 매체로서 인식되어야 하며, 인간 정서와 하나님의 초월성이 상호 의존적이며 호혜적인 역동성을 보일 때, 기독교 영성 분별은 건강한 열매를 기대할 수 있다고 주장한다.
