Abstract
The purpose of the essay is to examine the problems of mirror-reading, a method widely used for the purpose of reconstructing the historical context of Paul s letters, especially his letter to the Galatians. The thesis of the study is that the subjectivity inherent in this method can never disappear, despite scholarly effort at methodological control and scientific precision. After discussing the view of George Howard and the criticism on the method by G. Lyons, we will have a much closer look at the suggestions of J. M. G. Barclay, whose methodological proposal is widely acknowledged as the most successful in refining the process of mirrorreading and thereby making it workable.
