- Abstract
- This study investigates the grammar errors that Korean university students make in TOEIC. 85 students participated in the study during the fall semester in 2013. Throughout the semester, they regularly reported on all the questions they got wrong in 10 units from the reading section of their textbook and why they thought they did. Analysis of the data revealed the grammar questions with the highest error rates, such as those about the usage of ‘representative’ versus ‘representation’ and the relative pronoun ‘whose,’ as well as the grammatical categories with the highest error rates, such as subject-and-verb agreement, tense, and voice. Among the causes of the errors, the major ones were reading difficulties, unfamiliar usage of verbs, and unmastered grammar skills. Among the suggestions this study makes for TOEIC courses are that subject-and-verb agreement, tense, and voice be taught first in order to be reviewed throughout the semester; an online site be constructed to provide more question practice for the questions with the highest error rates; and instruction on reading skills be included in grammar instruction.
