Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare and examine effects of yoga and walking exercise on cardiovascular risk factors, biomarkers of aging, and stress hormones of obese elderly males, and to provide basic data for health promotion of obese elderly men. The subjects in this experiment were divided into the exercise group (n=15) who carried out 16-week program of yoga and walking exercise and the control group (n=14). First, regarding cardiovascular risk factors, exercise group showed significant changes in TC(p<.01), HDL-C(p<.05), LDL-C(p<.05), and SBP(p<.05). Second, exercise group showed significant changes in Melatonin(p<.05) regarding biomarkers of aging, and in ACTH(p<.05) and cortisol(p<.05) regarding stress hormones. In conclusion 16-week yoga and walking exercise, for 4 days per week and 1 hour per day, is effective for reduction of cardiovascular risk factors and increase of Melatonin and stress hormones of obese elderly males. Therefore, it is considered that 16-week yoga and walking exercise treatment can be used to present basic educational data with respect to development of exercise program for obese elderly men. In future, it is necessary to conduct researches about long-term yoga and walking exercise, and about stress hormones of obese elderly women who are not familiar with exercise.
