타임머신/시간여행 모티브 드라마에 나타난 자기 계발 이데올로기 - 텔레비전 드라마 <미래의 선택>을 중심으로

Abstract

2012~2013 시기는 타임슬립을 통한 시간여행 드라마들이 집중적으로 방영되었던 시기이다. <미래의 선택>은 타임머신 시간여행과 평행우주론을 적용한 드라마로서 이 시기의 타임슬립 드라마들과는 다른 전략을 구사하고 있다. <미래의 선택>은 타임슬립을 이용한 시간여행의 판타지 양식을 표방하고 있는 드라마이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 드라마는 시간여행의 판타지를 효과적으로 실현시키지 못한다. 그 이유는 이 드라마가 타임머신 모티브를 지극히 허술하고 작위적으로 사용했을 뿐 아니라, 미래로부터 현재로 온 시간여행자가 서사의 주변으로 밀려나면서 현재의 네 젊은이들의 복잡한 애정 관계와 여주인공의 성장담이 전면으로 나서기 때문이다. 이에 따라 <미래의 선택>은 여주인공 나미래(윤은혜 분)의 자기 주도적인 선택과 노력과 성공의 서사를 전경화하게 된다. 이러한 서사는 여주인공을 주체적이고 자율적인 여성 주체로 구현하는 것처럼 보일 수 있으나, 이 서사가 내포하고 있는 이데올로기적 징후를 살펴보면 다른 해석이 도출될 수 있다. 이 드라마에서 여주인공의 자기 주도적인 성공 스토리는 신자유주의 체제의 주체 형성 원리로 작동하고 있는 ‘자기 계발 이데올로기’를 내포하고 있다. 결국 <미래의 선택>은 시간여행 모티브를 활용한 판타지 장르를 표방하고 있지만, 시간여행이라는 판타지 도구들을 벗기고 나면 신자유주의 체제를 유지하기 위한 지배 이데올로기를 공고히 하는 기능을 수행하는 드라마로 귀결된다.

Time-traveling TV dramas which use 'time slip' phenomenon are intensively on air from 2012 to 2013. <A Choice of Mi-rae> is the drama in which time travel and the theory of parallel universe are adopted, using time machine. The drama is intriguing in that it executes the different strategy from other time slip dramas. The narration of time travel by time machine attempts to satisfy the characters' desire for changing their unsatisfying reality through moving the present into the past. However, in this drama, the time traveller who goes back to the past does not change her life. Accordingly, the fantasy effect that the narration of time travel provides does not appear. <A Choice of Mirae> is the drama representing the fantasy aspect of time travel by time machine. Nevertheless, the drama dose not realize it effectively not only because the drama uses the motif of time machine as extremely loose and deliberate but also because the time traveller who comes to the present from the future deviates from the main stream of the narration. Consequently, the present complicated romantic relationship of four young people and the growth story of the heroin become the center of the narration. It follows that in <A Choice of Mirae>, the self-directed choice, efforts and success of heroin Na mira are foregrounded. Even though the heroin seems to realize herself as independent and self-restraint, if the ideologic symptom included in the narration can be observed, another interpretation should be derived in the drama. In this drama, the self-motivated success story of the heroin is related to the ideology of self-enrichment which operates the principle of the formation of the subject under neoliberalism. Even though <A Choice of Mirae> is a fantasy genre using the motif of time travel, if the fantasy apparatus of time travel is deprived of, it is concluded that the drama is the one which has function to consolidate the governing ideology for maintaining neoliberalism.
