신뢰가 경제성장에 미치는 영향

Abstract

최근 사회적 자본, 특히 신뢰(trust)가 경제성장에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구가 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 신뢰는 협업 증진, 불확실성 감축, 대리인 비용의 절감을 통해 거래비용을 줄이고 시장경제의 효율성을 높여 경제성장을 촉진한다. 신뢰가 경제성장에 미치는 인과효과를 실증분석을 통해 식별하는 데에는 측정오차로 인한 희석편의, 역인과관계, 누락변수 편의 등의 문제가 있다. 선행연구 문헌에서는 신뢰가 역사 속에서 오랜 기간 동안 형성되었다는 특성을 반영하여 주로 역사적 요인을 도구 변수로 활용해 왔다. 본고에서는 1920년의 초등학교 취학률을 새롭게 도구변수로 이용하여 신뢰가 경제성장에 미치는 효과를 살펴봤다. 분석결과는 선행연구와 유사하게 나타났다. 일반화된 신뢰 수준이 높을수록 1인당 GDP가 더 컸다. 신뢰는 단기 경제성장률에 대해서는 양의 효과를 미쳤지만, 장기 경제성장률에 대한 효과는 뚜렷하지 않았다(JEL: O43, Z13).

Today, there are many studies researching the role of social capital, including trust, in economic growth. Trust reduces transaction cost and raises the efficiency of the market economy through the channels of promoting cooperation, decreasing uncertainty, and saving the agency cost. Three challenges stand out in estimating the effect of trust on economic growth, which are the attenuation bias, reverse causality, and the omitted variable problems. Scholars have used historical variables as an instrumental variable to deal with the three problems in identification. The effect of trust on economic growth is estimated in this paper using the 1920 primary school enrollment rate as an instrument. The result is consistent with the existing literature. The higher is the level of the generalized trust, the greater is GDP per capita. Trust also has a positive effect on the GDP growth rate in the short run, but the effect is unclear in the long run.
