- Abstract
This study aims to analyze characteristics of life time use and travel patterns of dual-worker households in Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) using 2009 time-use survey data. In doing so, we analyzed a descriptive statistics for personal time use by household type (single-worker or dual-worker) and gender. We also built multinomial logit models for three mode choices (Auto, transit, and walk). Major findings from this research can be summarized as follows. First, the wife in a dual-worker household has 6.7 times more houseworks than husband's on weekdays, and 3.5 times more on weekends, implying that high family-related work burden is placed on the wife's shoulder. Second, husbands in dual-worker households are likely to use automobile in the commuting trips, while wives rely on walk and public transit. In addition, wives have high dependence on walk in family-related trips. Third, we found time thresholds for the family-related trips, which are 30 minutes for automobile and 20 minutes for walk. Finally, multinomial logit model results support the argument presenting wives' high dependence on walk in the commuting trips.
