- Abstract
This paper analyses the utilization patterns of the N-screen service using diary data from the Korean media panel for years 2011 and 2012. The N-screen service is the real time broadcasting or VOD service through various screens other than the home TV, including PCs, tablets and mobile phones. A probit model is estimated for the sample of potential users to identify factors affecting the probability of the usage of the N-screen service. The results show that the probability of using the N-screen service is lower for people watching home TV longer, for TV owners and for subscribers of paid TV services. These imply that the N-screen service plays a role in substituting home TV as a medium of viewers’ enjoyment of TV service. As for devices, owners of notebook PCs, tablets or smart phones have a higher probability of using the N-screen service while owners of desktop PCs or DMB phones do not. Besides, viewer preferences for entertainment programs, progressive political attitude, and younger age exert positive effects on the viewers’ use of the N-screen service.
