- Abstract
- In recent years, agreat amount of corpus-based cognitive research has been carried outto characterize words and grammatical structures. In this line ofresearch, this research investigates meanings and usages of kewul‘mirror’ through an examination of the word in the Sejong Projectcorpus. This study examines kewul and its related words, showingtheir frequency in the corpus. It also shows the distribution of literalversus metaphorical meanings of kewul in the texts. Examinationshows that the literal meanings of kewul can be characterized in thefollowing terms: (i) reflective nature, (ii) a [make-up] tool for lookingat oneself, (iii) the property of distorting images, (iv) materials ofmirrors. The study shows that the metaphorical meanings of kewulare found when kewul is compared to mind, literature [novels, etc.],past [bad] events/ examples, media/newspapers, other parties, language, etc. Exploration shows that the metaphorical use of kewul is basedon the metaphor ‘X-IS-A MIRROR (X=mind, literature, media, etc.)’,when viewed in terms of the theory of conceptual metaphor. Finally, this research claims that a corpus-based cognitive analysis is a usefultool in characterizing metaphorical meanings of words.
