엘리트 대학 중심의 학연과 이사 승진과의 관계

Abstract

기업에서 엘리트 대학 중심의 학연의 영향이 상당할 것이라는 사회적 통념이 지배적이나 이에 대한 실증분석은 부족한 편이다. 이 연구는 일본 기업 내 학연과 이사들의 승진 간의 관계를 분석하고 있다. 이사들의 출신대학 중에서 상위 4개 대학에 속하는 도쿄대, 교토대, 게이오대, 와세다대를 중심으로 사장이 이들 대학 출신일 때 동일 대학 출신을 이사회 구성원으로 승진시키는지 살펴보았다. 사장과 신임 이사의 출신대학 사이에는 일견 관련성이 있는 것으로 보이나, 기업의 고유효과를 넣어 분석할 경우 와세다대를 제외하고는 사장의 출신대학이 갖는 효과는 사라졌다. 이는 사장이 동일 대학 출신을 이사로 승진시키는 데 영향을 주기보다는 기업에서 특정 대학 출신을 선호하는 경향이 있다는 것을 짐작케 한다.

This study attempts to examine the existence of alumni tie among elite university graduates in the boardroom. Specifically, this research examined whether shachos (Japanese CEO) that are from one of the top 4 elite universities (i.e., University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Keio University and Waseda University) tend to promote their alumni as new directors in Japanese manufacturing firms. Initial analysis seems to suggest the influence of academic tie in board director promotion: the fact that a shacho had graduated from a particular elite university increased the probability of promoting a person from the same elite university as new board directors. However, this effect disappeared when firm fixed effects were considered.
