- Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between urban spatial forms and environmental factors using Kruskal-Wallis and correlation analyses. For the empirical analyses, this study uses urban density, urban concentration, types of urban forms (multiple nuclei-dispersed, multiple nuclei-concentrated, mono nuclei-dispersed, and mono nuclei-concentrated), and environmental factors, such as energy consumption, air quality, and resource consumption for 82 cities in Korea. Findings are as follows. First, concentrated urban form has a negative correlation with energy use. Second, the concentrated urban form is also closely correlated with superior environmental quality. Lastly, although the urban form is nuclei-concentrated, it has different impacts on environmental factors between multiple nuclei-concentrated or mono nuclei-concentrated types.
Through the empirical analyses, this study suggests better urban form for environmental enhancement, so that it should be very helpful to persue environmentally sustainable urban development and management.
