- Abstract
- This paper aimed to reflect on the status and challenge of physical education as liberal education(PELE) in university settings and to reconstruct it in Korean universities. For doing this, 10 instructors from five major locations were chosen to do in-depth interviews and to analyze the interviewed data. As a result, three themes emerged such as 'physical education as liberal education without humanities', 'meaningless various courses', 'isolated physical culture', 'instructor first, and then course second', and 'non-advanced sport facility'. Based on the emerging themes, three reconstructing issues came up in terms of value, curriculum, and environment in PELE. First, PELE should simultaneouly take two significant roles to pursuit the values of physical education and liberal education. Second, it is needed to develop various curriculum models in PELE so that values of PELE should be substantialized in university settings. Finally, the environment of PELE should be renovated to meet educational needs of university students with lots of physical and human resources.
