Abstract
We deposited epitaxial and polycrystalline SrLaMgTaO6 (SLMTO) thin films on SrTiO3 (001) and MgO (001) substrates, respectively, using pulsed laser deposition, and investigated the dependence of the structural and photoluminescence (PL) properties on the substrate. The X-ray diffraction patterns were examined to determine the growth behaviors of the SLMTO films on the SrTiO3 (001) and MgO (001) substrates. Under the same deposition conditions, the SLMTO films deposited on the SrTiO3 (001) substrate were aligned out of the substrate plane, whereas those on the MgO substrate exhibited polycrystalline growth. The PL spectra revealed that the SLMTO films exhibited significantly different visible light emissions. Further, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated differences in the chemical binding states of the Ta-O and Mg-O bonds on the surfaces of the thin film samples; these states play an important role in the visible light emission.
