- Abstract
- This study is aimed to examine a doppelganger motif in <Hexentanz II>, the seminal work of Mary Wigman who is renowned as the founder of Ausdruckstanz (expressive dance) as well as to analyze its symbolic elements in her representative work. In the begin of Twentieth Century the doppelganger motif was a popular theme of depicting the conflict between external and internal motions and psyche in German expressionism. A mask, a mirror, and a witch figure in <Hexentanz II> exemplify that Wigman's work is profoundly influenced by the expressionism. By analyzing a video and her own writings, we show that the doppelganger motif serves as expressing an inner motion of the self. In <Hexentanz II> she can realize her search for the true self through a magic transformation and complete the form and content of a new modern dance.
