Abstract
This study aimed at establishing the concept of color evaluation for public information signs and setting up objective color evaluation criteria for public information signs, recognizing the importance of public information signs for the improvement of urban aesthetics. The conclusions of the study are as follows. First, public information signs are very important to understand the space of modern cities, aiming for pedestrian-centered cities. In particular, color has a tremendous influence on information delivery, positioning, and image formation of space to ensure smooth movement. Second, “symbolism, identification, continuity, harmony, sustainability, and unity” were derived to be the essential conditions of public information sign color to evaluate the color of public information signs objectively and apply the appropriate color to a space. Third, it is necessary to establish an independent evaluation plan for the color of a public information sign because there is a high probability of spreading to various fields when continuous evaluation is carried out actively. Fourth, a Delphi survey was conducted on an expert panel to verify the importance of evaluation items and evaluation factors of public information signs and the appropriateness of evaluation factors. Lastly, a color evaluation plan for public information signs was established, consisting of 5 evaluation items and 15 evaluation factors, such as “Identity(3), Sustainability(3), Harmony(3), Symbolism(2) and Consistrationality(6).” This study is meaningful in the sense that it suggests independent evaluation criteria for public information sign color by focusing on public information sign color in the public design fields in which active research is currently underway and by drawing on the evaluation items and factors that are essential conditions for public information sign color. If this is reflected from the beginning of public information sign color planning, it will contribute greatly to the improvement of the identity and image of urban areas.
