- Abstract
- The primary purpose of the study is to propose the future tasks of the National Health Insurance (NHI) System in Korea, based on the analysis of its major achievements. For the stated purpose, the study summarizes the brief history of the NHI, explains unique features of current system, and discusses main issues and challenges in the existing scheme. Apart from its welfare achievements within a short period of time, the NHI is now facing the budgetary constraints generated by the late 1990s financial crisis. Therefore, cost containment efforts are necessary to control cost and maintain the efficiency of the scheme. .
