내러티브접근의 가족치료사적 의의와 한국 가족치료 발전에 대한 함의 - 고 마이클 화이트의 작업에 대한 재조명 -

Abstract

이 논문의 목적은 내러티브접근의 공동창시자인 화이트와 덜리치센터 동료들의 작업을 중심으로, 그의 작업이 갖는 가족치료사적 의의와 한국 가족치료의 발전에 주는 함의를 고찰하는데 있다. 이를 위해, 내러티브접근의 실천을 구체적으로 기술한 자료들을 비롯하여 화이트나 동료들의 관련 저서, 역서 등을 고찰 작업의 자료로 삼았다. 내러티브접근은 치료행위를 비롯한 모든 인간행위를 사회, 문화, 역사를 맥락으로 하는 권력관계의 산물로 보았고 인간 삶의 의미를 인간 변화의 동력으로 보았으며 공동체를 통한 문제해결과 사회변화를 추구한 점에서 병리적 가족구조의 파악과 개입에 초점을 두었던 체계적 가족치료 관점의 지평을 넓히는데 기여했다. 이러한 점은 급격한 사회경제적 변화와 무한 경쟁체계 속에서 한국사회가 안게 된 각가지 가족관련 문제들을 좀 더 맥락에 민감하게 바라보도록 하고, 한국의 가족치료의 실천이 한국의 사회문화적 맥락 속에서 이루어질 수 있도록 하는 철학적, 이론적, 실천적 지침이 될 수 있다는데 그 의의가 있다.

The purpose of this paper was to examine the significance of narrative therapy, as practiced by its co-developer Michael White and his colleagues at Dulwich Centre, within the history of family therapy and to explore the implications of this approach for family therapists in Korea. In the midst of dramatic socioeconomic changes and an open competition for survival in Korean society, many family-related problems have emerged. The narrative approach—with its attunement to issues of social, historical, and social context; power; meaning; expert knowledge; and community—serves as a useful lens for viewing such problems in a context-sensitive way, making it possible for therapists to practice with a keen appreciation of the Korean cultural context.
