Abstract
The study intends to understand the pedestrian movement in urban space engendered by the relationship between spatial structure and actual usage by people. For the purpose three urban districts of Insa-dong, Myung-dong and Apkujung-dong are analyzed by Space Syntax method and surveyed for the data of spatial movement of pedestrian and distribution of shops. It is to understand how the people's movement in urban space are influenced by its spatial configuration and by the spatial distribution of shops. The analysis shows that whereas people move around according to the spatial properties of urban structure in Insa-dong and Myung-dong, people move according to the spatial distribution of shops in Apkujung-dong. It is presupposed that Apkujung-dong has a 'transpatial' urban structure while the other two have 'spatial' urban structure. The spatial urban structure is supposed to open to visitors and strangers as well as inhabitants. By contrast, the transpatial urban structure is apt to include only inhabitants excluding visitors and strangers. This exclusiveness is due not to a physical boundary but to a culturally inscribed demarcation which opens itself to the ones who understand the cultural presuppositions imbedded in the area. Understanding the cultural properties of urban space is important for it is directly related to what kind of urban culture we want to generate for the future.
