문장 의미 처리에서 학령전기 아동의 운율 정보 이용

Abstract

배경 및 목적: 본 연구는 학령전기 아동들이 문장의 의미와 구조의 결정에 중요한 역할을 담당하는 운율 정보를 문장 의미 결정에 이용할 수 있는 조건들을 살펴보았다. 방법: 실험 1에서는 ‘어디 가요?’와 같은 의문문의 의미를 운율에 따라 다르게 해석할 수 있는지를 이야기를 듣고 답하도록 하였고, 실험 2에서는 ‘기린/과자 먹어요.’와 같이 중의성을 띈 문장(‘기린이 과자를 먹는다’ 혹은 ‘누군가 기린과자를 먹는다’)의 의미를 운율이나 형태소 정보에 따라 해석할 수 있는지를 보기 위해, 문장을 듣고 의미에 맞는 그림 고르기 과제를 운율 정보만 제시한 조건, 형태소 정보만 제시한 조건, 그리고 운율과 형태소를 함께 제시한 세 조건에서 수행하도록 하여 아동의 문장 처리에서 운율 정보가 독자적으로 차지하는 중요도를 살펴보았다. 결과: 실험 1과 같이 운율 정보가 문장의 구조와 무관하게 어휘의 의미에만 관련된 경우, 3～4세 아동들도 운율 정보에 따라 문장을 잘 해석하였다. 반면에 운율 정보가 문장의 통사적 구조에 직결된 실험 2의 문장들의 경우 5～6세 아동들도 운율 정보에 따라 문장을 해석하는 데 어려움을 보였다. 그러나 형태소 정보와 운율 정보를 모두 사용할 수 있을 때, 형태소만 사용할 수 있는 조건보다 높은 수행을 보여 운율 정보가 아동의 문장 처리에 어느 정도 독자적 기여를 하고 있음을 보여 주었다. 논의 및 결론: 학령전기 아동들은 운율 정보를 잘 탐지하고 문장 처리와 해석에 이를 이용하지만, 문장 해석 조건에 따라 이러한 능력이 쉽게 제약을 받는 것으로 나타나 이렇게 제약을 부여하는 조건들과 그 원인을 설명하는 이론과 관련 요소들을 논의하였다.

Background & Objectives: The present study examined sentential conditions that affect preschool-aged children’s ability to use prosody in sentence processing. Methods: In experiment 1, children were asked to respond to ambiguous questions, which can be disambiguated solely based on prosodic information, after listening to a series of stories that preceded the question. Experiment 2 examined whether the children can use prosody to determine sentence structures and meaning accordingly and compared the role of prosody in child parsing to that of morphological information, such as case markers, by presenting syntactically ambiguous sentences across three conditions: prosody-only, morphology-only, and prosody-morphology. This approach also allowed us to determine the unique contribution of prosody to child parsing above and beyond morphological information. Results: Children as young as 3 to 4 years of age were able to determine the target meaning of the ambiguous questions based on prosody in experiment 1,in which prosody was not relevant to sentence structure. By comparison, children as old as 6 years of age still showed some difficulty using prosody to determine sentence structure and meaning in which prosody was directly related to determining the structure of the target sentence in experiment 2. Experiment 2 also revealed that children performed better in prosody-morphology conditions than in morphology-only conditions, suggesting that prosody uniquely contributes to child parsing above and beyond morphological information. Discussion & Conclusion: We discussed both the specific conditions that seem to affect the child’s use of prosody in child parsing and why such variations in using prosody might emerge as children develop a language.
