- Abstract
- This study was conducted to investigate radical scavenging effect and protective effect against gastric cancer of Lycoris sp. Scavenging activities on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and hydroxyl radical (ㆍOH), antimicrobial activity against Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and growth inhibitory effects in AGS human gastric adenocarcinoma cells were measured. DPPH scavenging activity was not strong, showing less than 30% at 1,000 μg/ml except L. flavescens and L. uydoensis. However, ㆍOH scavenging activity of Lycoris sp. was higher than 80% at 250 μg/ml. Particularly, the treatment of 500 μg/ml of L. radiata showed 99.61% scavenging activity against ㆍOH. In paper disc assay, 12 mm circle was appeared by the treatment of 15 μg/30 μl of L. uydoensis. Furthermore, the extracts of Lycoris sp. showed high growth inhibitory effect of AGS human gastric adenocarcinoma cells. Especially, L. uydoensis inhibited the growth of AGS cells by up to 91.57% at 50 μg/ml. In conclusion, L. flavescence and L. uydoensis showed strong radical scavenging activity. In addition, L. uydoensis exerted the highest protective effect against H. pylori and gastric cancer. Lycoris sp. could be new resources with antioxidative activity and protective effect against gastric cancer. (Cancer Prev Res 16, 161-166, 2011)
