- Abstract
The contents industry is understood as high value-added industries based on advanced technological prowess and creativity, and accounts for a large proportion of the economy of developed countries. In addition, contents industry is receiving increased attention since it emphasizes the importance in a variety of areas, including culture, lifestyle, and economy.
This study analyzes the economic ripple effect on the contents industry of Korea, U.S., and Japan, using national input-output tables and world input-output tables during 2000~2014 provided by the EC. As a result, Korea’s proportion of intermediate inputs in the U.S. and Japanese contents production is gradually increasing over time. Furthermore, although the Korean contents industry has a higher production inducement coefficient than the U.S. and Japan, the value added inducement coefficient is low. The low value added inducement coefficient means that the value added is leaked abroad due to a high import ratio. This indicates that, while the Korean contents industry is highly productive in both domestic and overseas, this phenomenon can slow down the growth of Korean contents industry from a long-term point of view. Therefore, in order to prevent declining productivity, it is required to improve the technology of the contents industry as well as to take measures against human capital development.
