Abstract
As groping for the directionality of our traditional martial arts, the research on the history of archery and its transformation process were conducted. The results of the research are as follows:First, it is not exactly known when and where archery was originated, but it began with the history of mankind as a way of living, and as to protect oneself and one’s family. With invention of gunpowder, it became the military arts to discipline one’s mind and body.Second, during Korea Dynasty, archery was widely used as a military weapon, military arts to discipline the mind and body of people, and as a kind of game. During Chosun Dynasty, it was used to engage men of ability through a competition. At the end of Chosun Dynasty and Japanese colonial period, however, archery was fallen into a decline due to the introduction of modern sports from the western countries and the racial assimilation policy by Japan. However, "Mudogigyecheyukbu" and "Sagunghoe", institutes for athletics in public and archery, were organized. Further, a society for the research of Chosun Archery was formed and a nation-wide archery competition was held, through which it became widely spread for people, young and old, men and women all alike.Third, currently about 18,000 players have registered in the Korea National Archery Association, which holds various matches including team competitions and individual competitions. These matches are being held at about 320 places around the nation.Archery has been transmitted from our ancestors as our tradition martial arts, though its purposes were different over time. Currently, however, it is weak compared to other modern sports. There exist a variety of methods to develop our mutual cooperation between the South and the North Korea. With this, it is believed that it would provide an opportunity to establish our subjecthood and to recover similarity as on one Korean National Community.
