Abstract
Solidification characteristics based on the unconfined compressive strength and leaching tests were examined with the sludge from an acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment plant, according to the various cement/sludge (C/S) ratios (1:0, 1:1, 1:1.3, 1:1.6, 1:1.9, 1:2.2). When sludge portion was increased, the unconfined compressive strength decreased dramatically over 80% compared to the control (C/S=1:0), however the difference between 7-day strength and 28-day strength was not significant at various C/S ratios. Nevertheless, from a standpoint of regulation, strength results satisfied the standards of Japan and U.S. From the leaching test (TCLP) of experimental specimen at various C/S ratios, most metal ions was not detected or under the US EPA Standards, except calcium. High concentration of Ca was expected easily based on the dissolution mechanism of CaO (major composition of cement and sludge). Overall, the cement solidification with the sludges from AMD treatment was proved as an environmentally safe method.
