- Abstract
- The ideal that 'beautiful woman have small feet originated in the Donghan era, and gained momentum during future generations and eventually turned into a extreme practice of foot binding. The basic notion of foot binding is to make feet small. It would have been impossible for woman of the past to exist as a member of society without adhering to the practice of foot binding which was the culturally accepted practice of that era.Although women who were subject to foot binding have presently done away with the cloth that constricted their feet, we can still observe women who have difficulty moving, and those who still suffer because of their deformed feet. The notion that beautiful women have small feet also existed in our country. If the Chinese naturally stunted the growth of feet through binding. Koreans made the feet small and sharp through wearing bootees. For that reason, it is common for old ladies who have won inner and outer bootees all their lives to have collapsed feet.
