- Abstract
- Kim, Sun-Hoi. 2006. An Analysis of Stress Patterns of English Bisyllabic Words in English Curriculum for Korean Primary and Secondary Education. Korean Journal of English Language and Linguistics 6-1, 155-177. The goal of this paper is to provide regular stress patterns of basic English bisyllabic words for Korean learners' understanding of English stress system. The basic assumption of this paper is that it is effective and practical for Korean learners of English to understand the stress patterns of frequently used words. Under this assumption, 737 bisyllabic content words are chosen as the data of this paper from the list of 2067 basic vocabularies in the 7th English curriculum for Korean primary and secondary education. According to the results of analysis in this paper, the stress assignment of these bisyllabic content words is predicted by some regular stress patterns. In particular, regular stress patterns are generalized without the effect of grammatical category for the bisyllabic words which end with an open syllable or a CVC closed syllable. On the other hand, for the bisyllabic words which end with one of CVCC, CVVC, and CVVCC closed syllables, the grammatical category affects their stress assignment.
