- Abstract
- Yim, Changguk. 2006. The Syntax of Secondary Predication Constructions in Korean. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 31-1, 125-141. This article examines resultative and depictive secondary predication constructions in Korean. It observes the syntactic properties that both constructions characterize, and proposes their respective syntactic structures. Specifically, as for resultative secondary predication, it argues, the matrix verb takes as the complement a small clause represented as PrP in the sense of Bowers 1993; that is, the object DP and the secondary predicate form a single constituent. By contrast, depictive secondary predication involves adjunction either to v' or to V' depending on the relevant subject of the secondary predicate. To support this proposal, the article provides empirical support emerging from a range of diagnostics such as relativization, pseudo-clefting, topicalization, scrambling, and do-so replacement. It also addresses Simpson (1983) and Levin & Rappaport Hovav's (1995) Direct Object Restriction, which states that only underlying direct objects are allowed to be the subject of a resultative secondary predicate, and presents supporting facts that the DOR holds for Korean as well.
