- Abstract
- A lot of traditional martial arts have been transmitted from generation to generation in Korea. Taekkyon, which is one of the transmitted traditional Korean martial arts, is a martial art appointed as National Intangible Cultural Property 76.
The goal of this study is to elucidate the influence of Judo on Taekkyon which has been recognized as a Korean traditional martial art. For doing this, this study focuses on Shin, Han-Sung who systemized Taekkyon.
The conclusion of this study is as follows. Taekkyon was created by a specific person, who is Shin, Han-Sung, and the techniques and system of Judo were selectively received into Taekkyun by him. It can be argued that under the support of Korean government, Taekkyon has contributed to making Korean people set up their identity even though like a complicated mosaic, it includes various cultural aspects which are compounded in a complex way.
Unlike other Korean martial arts, Taekkyon has been newly understood as a traditional martial art native to Korea by Korean people. Further, the view of Taekkyon as a national property is argued to be regarded as an attempt to culturally integrate Korean people within a nation from the standpoint of finding out the national identity from a traditional national culture. Finally, Taekkyon has had a status as one of important national cultural assets with being appointed as National Intangible Cultural Property 76.
