- Abstract
- In recent years, a great amount of research which explores the nature and properties of conversation has been carried out in discourse analysis. The purpose of this research is to show that a conversation-analytic approach is needed in language learning and teaching. To achieve this goal, this research first provides a brief overview of major topics in conversation analysis in the following terms: (i) turn-taking, (ii) adjacency pairs, (iii) preference organization, and (iv) repair. After discussing these major topics, this study provides a sample analysis of some of high school English textbooks. The analysis shows that most of the textbooks lack conversation-analytic notions in presenting dialogues and conversations, and thus they do not pay much attention to conversational properties reflected in turn-taking, repair, adjacency pairs, preference organization, and so on. Based on the sample analysis, this paper claims that a conversation-analytic approach is needed in learning and teaching foreign languages, writing textbooks, analyzing textbooks/teaching materials, and doing research on second language acquisition.
