- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to identify factors that impede English learning in web-based instruction. To achieve this goal, this paper reports a qualitative analysis of the responses of 24 EFL learners at a cyber university in Korea. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews regarding various aspects of web-based EFL learning. The research inquiries were: (1) What are the factors that impede English learning in web-based instruction? (2) How can we minimize these impeding factors? Emergent themes regarding the factors that impede English learning include the difficulty of interaction between students and their online teacher(or other classmates), problems associated with instructional design, lack of administrative support in web environments, resistance to new learning methods, lack of self-regulated learning ability, and low levels of computer skills. The data also indicate some practical suggestions for eliminating these impeding factors and facilitating learning in web-based language instruction, in terms of instructional design, learning environments, and learner characteristics.
