Abstract
The goal of this paper is to investigate the cultural cognates and similarity between Slavic and Proto-Indo-European(PIE) cultures. The Slavs, being one of groups inheriting linguistic and cultual cognates of PIE, possess various deities in their mythology. Equivalent to Zeus or Jupiter, the supreme god in Slavic mythology is Perun, who has the authority of using lightning and thunderstorm. Also, there are many deities the Slavs worshiped; Rod, Dazhbog, Bielobog, Chernobog, Hors, Mokosh, Semargl, etc. As shown in other mythological stories, Slavic mythology is characterized by i) dichotomous view to objects and the world, ii) anthropomorphism and personification, iii) panentheism, and iv) the concept of circulation, which all originated from PIE world view and cultural background. Most of all, the World Tree, equivalent to Yggdrasil in Old Norse mythology, is a good exemplary to prove that Slavic mythology shares many stories and symbolic factors with PIE cultures. Slavic mythology reflects Slavs’ pagan belief, culture, tradition, and life, etc. before the Christianization of Kiev in AD 988.
