- Abstract
- Researches on Choi Seung‐hee have been limited to parts of her life or fragmentary facts related to her without efforts to understand Choi Seung‐hee as a person who lived a dramatic life through the tumults in the history of the 20th century and agonized in the vortex of wars and revolutions. Thus, it is considered necessary to review Choi Seung‐hee, who was the front runner of early dramatic art, from a more objective viewpoint on the one hand and from the viewpoint of dance history on the other hand. Previous researches have been based on historical materials on Choi’s dance activities, and there have been relatively exhaustive studies on her dance activities and works. However, her influence on the development of the Korean dance world has not been studied sufficiently. Thus, the present research was focused on Choi Seung‐hee’s influence on the status of the dance world, dance education and the development of theatrical art. For this study, we used literatures such as magazines, autobiographies, photographs and newspapers. Choi Seung‐hee was extremely enthusiastic for dance creation, creating her own dances while leading the modernization of Korean traditional dances. In addition, she developed new methods of Korean dance education based on ballet and contemporary dances. She educated young dancers through a well‐organized education system and played crucial roles in the history of Korean dance through presenting Korean dance on the world stage and enhancing the status of Korean dance.
