- Abstract
- Seoul introduced District Unit Planning and have been operating the so-called ‘the Environmental Improvement Type District
Unit Planning’ which is a new urban design approach to consider changes in social and urban circumstances through resident
participation for improvement of commercial streets in already developed area since 2000. The most important characteristic of
the Environmental Improvement Type District Unit Planning is resident participation in the urban planning process. ‘The Resident
Agreement’ is concluded and operated as the means of the residents participation to improve and maintain the residential
environment independently. Because residents conclude ‘the Resident Agreement’ by themselves independently, and they operate it
themselves, it will be called ‘the Independent Agreement’ by the comprehensive meaning in this paper.
Seoul is getting tangible results of environment improvement as well as economic revitalization in the commercial streets of
already developed area through ‘the Independent Agreement’.
Therefore, the purposes of this study are to verify the effectiveness of ‘the Independent Agreement’ and propose the
improvement in urban planning by resident participation.
